Following the multi-award-winning success of the previous scheme, Exeter Road, Capital were commissioned to take on an even larger retrofit project to 8 tower blocks with ECO funded external wall insulation and associated works to two towers, a district heating project using ground source heat pump technology to four towers and an air source district heating scheme to four towers.
An innovative ground source heat pump scheme utilising a 205m deep communal ground loop which accesses stored solar energy beneath the ground was proposed for the Channel Island Blocks/Eastfield Road Estate. An innovative air source heating strategy is proposed for the Kettering Road Estate. External wall insulation is proposed to Dorset and Keys Towers.
The forerunner scheme by Capital was the first installation of ground source heating to high rise blocks in England and is England’s largest application of individual ground source heat pumps on shared boreholes.
Exploiting natural energy from the ground is one of the best ways to provide heating and hot water supplies. It is safe and efficient and this project also features remote web monitoring enabling remote diagnostics and on-going efficiency measurement. This information will be fed back to the BRE. This innovative solution provides warmth and hot water at much reduced cost; harnesses a natural heat source reducing carbon emissions and replaces an old underfloor heating system.
The project is funded through Energy Company Obligations (ECO) Scheme and the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The Capital outlay will be recovered over a 20 year period so the project will be self-funding.
